University of Waterloo

University of Waterloo

Hello, and welcome to the WRX Property Group website and blog! We’ve been discussing the three major post-secondary institutions available in Kitchener-Waterloo over the past three days (so far, we’ve covered Conestoga College and Wilfrid Laurier University). Today, we move onto the final university of our series: the University of Waterloo (UW). In many ways, the success of UW is tied up with the success with Kitchener-Waterloo as a whole; things like Velocity (UW’s official startup and entrepreneurial program, which runs a large office out of downtown Kitchener’s innovative Tannery District, in addition to on-campus facilities) mean UW is a major contributor to Kitchener-Waterloo’s economy, and a major reason why many choose to call the Region home. So let’s check out UW, and all the things that make it great!

Wilfrid Laurier University

Wilfrid Laurier University

Good morning/afternoon/evening (pick whichever is most appropriate) and welcome to the WRX Property Group website and blog! We’re happy to see you. As you may already know, we’re covering the most important aspects of life in Kitchener-Waterloo, one day, and one topic, at a time. Yesterday, we embarked on a new journey to investigate and assess the post-secondary institutions available in the Waterloo Region. Conestoga College, Kitchener-Waterloo’s polytechnic education-provider, was yesterday’s subject, and today we’ll be covering the first of Waterloo’s two universities: Wilfrid Laurier University. Tomorrow we’ll finish with the University of Waterloo. So let’s dive into Wilfrid Laurier University (they do, after all, have an Olympic-size pool)!
Wilfrid Laurier University sometimes goes by WLU, but most often it’s referred to simply as Laurier. Laurier is located right in the heart of Waterloo, by the intersection of King Street North and University Avenue West. It’s truly an amazing location for the campus: University Avenue is bustling and filled with opportunities for residence and dining (there’s a somewhat astounding number of restaurants within walking distance of the campus, on University Ave and King Street); the University of Waterloo is also on University Avenue, just to the west, and Conestoga College’s Waterloo campus lies just to the east. South of the Laurier campus is the picturesque and popular Uptown Waterloo (and the lovely, sprawling Waterloo Park), and north of the campus is Waterloo Collegiate Institute, one of Waterloo’s public high schools (WRDSB schools have partnerships with the Waterloo Universities, including Dual Credit courses).

Conestoga College

Conestoga College

Greetings, and a very warm welcome to the WRX Property Group website and blog! We’ve covered the neighbourhoods of Kitchener-Waterloo, Kitchener and Waterloo themselves, and many more of the great places and things in the regions. Time and again, the major post-secondary institutions located in Kitchener-Waterloo have come up – after all, they are a big part of what makes the area great, and they’ve certainly played a major role in the Waterloo Region’s rise to the world stage as a leader in technology. So now, WRX Property Group is brimming with pride as we unveil a brand new, three-part series on post-secondary education! Today, we’ll start with Conestoga College; but don’t fret, perennial favourites Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo are just around the corner.
Conestoga College is the local college for the TriCities (Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge) and the surrounding Townships, and the only local provider of polytechnic education. To clarify, in Canada college refers to primarily to technical schools with programs geared towards specific careers; universities, on the other hand, are institutions that grant undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. There is some overlap between the two (both can grant Bachelor’s Degrees, for example) but typically colleges are more ‘applied’ or hands on, whereas universities are more theoretical.
