St. Mary’s High School is a Waterloo Catholic District School Board high school for Grades 9 to 12, at 1500 Block Line Road in south Kitchener. It is the Catholic high school for most families in south and southwest Kitchener. If you are buying with teenagers, the big thing to know is that its boundary shrank when the new Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School opened in east Kitchener in September 2026.

About St. Mary’s High School

St. Mary’s began in 1907 as St. Ann’s Convent School, run by the School Sisters of Notre Dame for Catholic girls, with nine students in its first class. It took the name St. Mary’s High School in Kitchener in 1928-1929, became co-ed in 1990 and moved from downtown to its current building on Block Line Road in 2002. The teams are the Eagles.

Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM): 12 majors, in Arts and Culture, Business, Construction, Energy, Health and Wellness, Hospitality and Tourism, Information and Communications Technology, Justice and Community Safety, Manufacturing, Engineering and Robotics, Sports, Transportation, and Non-Profit, Education and Childcare.
Enrichment: Advanced Placement (AP) courses, university dual credit courses, and gifted education through special education services.
Hands-on pathways: co-op, college dual credits and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP).
Support: a Student Success Centre, ESL and ELD for multilingual learners, a Community Living program and a graduation coach for Black students.

Sports are a big part of school life. St. Mary’s competes in the AAA division of District 8, part of CWOSSA and OFSAA, with teams in every season. The building also houses the Kitchener Public Library’s Country Hills Library, which opened in 2004 as a partnership with the Catholic board, and the City’s Activa Sportsplex, with two ice pads and an indoor walking track, is next door on Lennox Lewis Way.

How St. Mary’s Rates

St. Mary’s is rated 6.1 out of 10 in the Fraser Institute’s latest report card on Ontario secondary schools, which uses 2023-2024 results. That puts it level with Grand River CI and a little behind Resurrection CSS (6.9) and St. David CSS (8.0). Notre Dame CSS is too new to be rated.

Keep the number in context. The Fraser rating is built mostly from provincial test results, so it says little about SHSM options, sports, the arts or how well a school suits your teen. My guide to Catholic high schools in Kitchener-Waterloo compares them side by side.

Which Neighbourhoods Feed Into St. Mary’s?

Its website lists ten Catholic elementary feeder schools: Blessed Sacrament (The Country Way), Holy Trinity (Rosenberg Way, opened 2025), John Sweeney (Activa Avenue), Monsignor Haller (Shea Crescent), Our Lady of Grace (Gracefield Crescent), St. Aloysius (Connaught Street), St. Bernadette (Lorne Avenue), St. Josephine Bakhita (Beckview Drive), St. Kateri Tekakwitha (Pioneer Drive) and St. Timothy (Bechtel Drive).

In practice that covers much of south and southwest Kitchener, including Country Hills, Doon and Pioneer Park, the Huron and Rosenberg areas, and Mill-Courtland closer to the centre.

What changed in 2026: Notre Dame CSS, at 20 Woolner Trail in east Kitchener, opened in September 2026 for Grades 7 to 10 and will add Grades 11 and 12. Canadian Martyrs, Saint John Paul II, St. Daniel, St. Anne (Kitchener) and St. Patrick now feed Notre Dame instead of St. Mary’s, and St. Mary’s Grade 9 students who live inside Notre Dame’s boundary move there for Grade 10.

Boundaries follow the elementary school areas, so always check the exact address with the WCDSB school finder before you make an offer. Out-of-boundary applications are considered only if the school has room, and out-of-boundary students do not get board transportation.

Homes Near St. Mary’s

Homes nearby are a mix of detached houses, semis and townhouses. In the MLS district that includes Country Hills (331 Alpine Village/Country Hills), the median sale price for a detached home was $690,000 over the 12 months to September 2026, and $485,000 for a townhouse, based on George’s analysis of ITSO MLS sales.

In the MLS district just west (333 Laurentian Hills/Country Hills W), the medians were $723,000 for a detached home, $623,000 for a semi, $559,000 for a townhouse and $360,000 for a condo apartment. In the MLS district that includes Pioneer Park and Doon (335 Pioneer Park/Doon/Wyldwoods), the detached median was $910,000 and the townhouse median $625,000. Is St. Mary’s a Good Fit for Your Family?

St. Mary’s suits families who want a large Catholic high school with a wide choice of courses, especially teens who like hands-on learning, sports or a head start on a career through its SHSM majors and co-op. In the two MLS districts closest to the school, detached medians were below the Kitchener-wide figure of $741,000, and Block Line ION Station is a short walk away.

The trade-offs: its Fraser rating sits in the middle of the pack for Kitchener-Waterloo, and a big school will not suit every teen. And the 2026 boundary change means older listings and neighbours may tell you St. Mary’s when the answer is now Notre Dame, so check every address.
