Luther Village on the Park
Kitchener-Waterloo has many top of the line facilities and services, including its well-regarded school boards (WRDSB and WCDSB) and its forward-thinking public transit (GRT). All of these features combine to make it one of the best places to live in Canada.
Kitchener-Waterloo also has quite a few retirement residences and communities available for people seeking accommodated-living, which is good because it ensures you’ll be able to find one that meets your needs, but challenging because there are so many options.
Starting today, WRX Property Group will be outlining retirement living communities throughout Kitchener-Waterloo, so you can get an idea of what each offers. Today, we’ll be looking at: Luther Village on the Park, which is in Waterloo near Uptown.
About
Luther Village on the Park is a subsidiary of Lutherwood, a health and social service organization that serves people in Kitchener-Waterloo and the Townships.
There are currently around 450 residents living in the retirement community; it’s a great place for people looking for access to additional care and community, and there are different levels of care available for different needs.
Luther Village on the Park promotes health and wellness, and they offer events and services to encourage both.

Accommodations
There are a variety of accommodations available at Luther Village on the Park. The primary options are: Life Lease (purchased); Assisted Living (rental); and Short-Term Stay Suites. These options are naturally suited to different people, with different needs.
Life Lease
The Life Lease option is great for seniors looking to live independently, but still having Luther Village’s services nearby. There are two types of Life Leases available: the Atrium Suite (702 – 1567 square feet) and the Garden Villa town home (1167 – 2200 square feet).
These suites are available for purchase, and there are monthly fees for maintenance and upkeep. They are beautiful suites, and there are a variety of shapes, sizes, and designs available to suit your needs. Additionally, the close-knit community, and the open, shared spaces, make cultivating friendships with fellow residents easy.
Another major reason to consider the Life Lease is financial incentive. Life Leases are very much worth considering – they enable you to make your money work for you, by investing in the real-estate market and earning interest, while also living in the property you own.
This is one of the major perks over renting: not only can you preserve your money, but there’s also the potential to gain more. Note that upon resale, the resident is entitled to the initial price, plus the appreciation/depreciation.
There is a guaranteed buy-back period of 9 months (or when the unit is resold), so if you need to vacate the suite, but the market is slow at that time, you don’t need to worry.
You can learn more about them in the WRX article on them here. Check out the Atrium floor plans here, and the Garden Villa floor plans here.
Rental
Rental suites are available in the Sunshine Centre; they range in size from 307 to 712 square feet. The standard suites have a small kitchenette, and premium suites include a full kitchen. There are some two-bedroom suites available, too.
In terms of level of care available, there are three packages: the Silver Service Package (Independent) provides three nutritious meals daily, and weekly housekeeping. Next up is the Gold Service Package (Assisted Living).
This package includes the meals and housekeeping, but adds up to 20 minutes per day of individualized personal support, enhanced personal and medical care (medication assistance, and help bathing), weekly laundry, and daily bed making/garbage pick-up.
Finally, the Platinum Service Package (Enhanced) includes all of the Silver/Gold services, and more (bathing/continence assistance, refreshments/tray service available all day, daily housekeeping, and an easily-adjustable hospital-style bed).
You can check out the individual floor plans available here.
The Short-Term Stay Suites are designed for residents needing additional support for only a short period of time, such as those recuperating after a surgery.
These suites are also located in the Sunshine Centre, and likewise include three full meals daily, personal and medical assistance (including 24 health care support), and fully-furnished suites.
One of Luther Village’s newer services is the Memory & Dementia floor. The all-inclusive care ensures your loved one is safe and sound. Nutritious meals, various therapies (including music and memory games), and personal care are all provided by a team of caring, well-trained professionals (including
Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, and Personal Support Workers).
Activities
There’s always something to do at Luther Village. Its community-centric atmosphere ensures that there are always fellow residents to chat with, of course, but there are also a wide variety of activities available to take part in.
Exercise and fitness classes can keep you feeling healthy: the Fitness Centre is designed specifically for older adults, with many state-of-the-art features, and the fitness coordinator (Nancy Munn) is a Registered Kinesiologist with relevant training.
Arts and crafts programs are available to keep your mind sharp and your creative juices flowing. Outdoor activities include walking groups, croquet, bocce ball, and gardening (there’s even a summertime farmers’ market). There’s an onsite, two-storey chapel, with a Chaplain, weekly worship services, and more.
Finally, the cultural program includes movie nights, guest speakers, and two on-site libraries; and the music program offers concerts, musicals, dances, and more.
Location
One of the main things Luther Village has going for it is, of course, its location. It’s located on the western side of Uptown Waterloo, a delightful area with handsome shops, fine dining, and plenty to see and do.
What makes Luther Village distinctly idyllic, though, is right on its doorstep: Waterloo Park. Waterloo Park is quite large, and it features multiple trails, the lovely Silver Lake, and more.
Conclusion
Luther Village on the Park is a caring, welcoming community, with dedicated, qualified staff, and multiple types of residences and care packages designed to meet your (or your loved one’s) needs. If you’re interested in Luther Village, a great next step is to book a tour.
