Going with kids
This is one of the easier festivals in the region to do with young children, for a few specific reasons.
Kids get the front row. Buskers seat children cross-legged on the pavement at the front of the circle, which means your five year old sees the whole show instead of the back of somebody's legs.
The daytime programming is aimed at them. Touch-a-Truck runs 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, on Regina Street Friday and in the City Hall Lot Saturday. Sunday morning's beatboxing workshop with Canadian champion Scott Jackson starts at 11:00 a.m. on Regina Street.
Sunday is the gentle day. It starts at 11:00 a.m. and ends with the Grand Finale at 4:00 p.m., so nobody is negotiating bedtime.
The 10 p.m. fire shows are the opposite. Friday's Fire Fusion Spectacular and Saturday's Inferno Force 5 are both worth seeing, but they are late and they are loud. That is an older-kid or no-kid evening.
Two things worth packing: cash in small bills so your kids can be the ones to tip, and a blanket or folding chair, since built-in seating around the circles is limited.
Parking and getting there
The festival points people to the Uptown Parkade, which has accessible spaces on the main level. Street parking and nearby lots fill up fast on Friday and Saturday evenings.
The ION light rail stops in Uptown Waterloo and drops you beside the action, which is the lower-stress option if you are coming in from Kitchener, Cambridge or the townships on a Saturday night. Grand River Transit typically runs extra service for the carnival.
